Courses > I want to get a job > Literacy and Numeracy
Literacy and numeracy skills are sometimes called basic skills or skills for life. This is because almost every single part of our life involves these skills.

50% of jobs need someone with basic skills above Level 1, which is why employers value these subjects so much.*

Equivalent to GCSEs
The Certificates in Adult Literacy and Numeracy are equivalent to the following GCSE grades:
Literacy Level 1 English GCSE Grade D–G
Numeracy Level 1 Maths GCSE Grade D–G
Literacy Level 2 English GCSE Grade A–C
Numeracy Level 2 Maths GCSE Grade A–C

Complete at a time and place that suits you
Care Training East Midlands has an accredited learndirect centre. Courses available through learndirect are online, giving you the flexibility to learn at a time and place that suits you.

How do I get a Certificate in Adult Literacy or Numeracy?
  1. Call Care Training East Midlands (CTEM) on 0115 9599 544.
  2. You will be booked in for an initial assessment. This will assess your strengths and weaknesses. You can choose to do both literacy and numeracy or just one subject.
  3. The results of the assessment will be used to create a learning plan that’s tailored to you. The results also determine your eligibility for funding. See below for details.
  4. Courses can be done over several short sessions anywhere that you have access to the internet. You can also visit CTEM’s learndirect centre Monday–Friday, 9:00am–4:30pm, to use a computer and see a tutor.
  5. When you are ready you can book in for your test to achieve the Level 1 or Level 2 qualification. This will take place at CTEM under exam conditions.

Funding available
You are eligible for funding if:
  • you are aged 19 years old or over
  • you are a British Citizen, come from an EU member country or have lived in the UK for 3 years or more (and have been given the right to remain)
  • your diagnostic assessment results show that you are working at Level 1 or below.

This means the Government will pay for your training and tests so they will not cost you a thing.

If your diagnostic assessment results show that you are currently working at Level 2 then you have two options:

  1. Pay £20 for the test and take it straight away. If you fail the test you will have to pay another £20 for each subsequent test you take.
  2. Access tuition to enable you to pass the Level 2 test. This one-to-one support is charged at £25 per hour. The test will be £20.
There is no charge for the initial appointment or assessment and no obligation to sign up.
