Literacy & Numeracy Courses
We have a variety of reading, writing and number courses from bite-sized taster courses to more in depth learning plans. As well as online courses Care Training has Literacy and Numeracy embedded in their programmes. So whether you need to brush up on your skills or gain a nationally recognised qualification, we can help.

 Writing
You will learn to plan, organise and check your writing so that you can be sure that your information and ideas are clear, properly presented and written in the language style most suited to your reader.

You will be shown how to work out the essential information you need to write about and how to choose the most appropriate format, style and language for the audience.

You will learn how to organise longer texts into logical paragraphs so that your writing is easier to read and understand.

You’ll explore how to match the vocabulary and tone of your writing to the audience and the purpose of the text.

You will also learn how to check your text for errors and how to avoid using repetitive, long-winded or ambiguous words and sentences in writing.

 Reading
Every day we come across different types of texts, from simple washing instructions to more complicated letters from our mortgage lender.

This course shows you how to analyse and evaluate texts, and how to work out how valid and relevant they are to you.

You will learn to identify the main points of a text and to understand why it was written and whether it’s relevant to you.

You will be shown how to analyse texts to see whether they are made up of facts, opinions or both.

You’ll look at persuasive texts and written arguments – you’ll see how they can present a one-sided argument or a balanced discussion and you’ll learn how to recognise the difference between the two!

You will have the chance to practice key reading skills like skimming, scanning, detailed reading and summarising.

 Whole Numbers
You will look at the different situations in which we use large, whole numbers at home and at work.

It gives you new strategies to help you calculate and compare large numbers.

You will begin by learning more about positive and negative numbers – how to order large numbers, how to add and subtract them and how to work with negative numbers.

You will learn new ways to multiply and divide large numbers and the special rules that apply to multiples, factors and prime numbers.

You will explore ratios in calculations and how direct proportion can help in creating scale drawings and maps. And you’ll be shown how to use formulae to solve more complex calculations.

 Common Measures
You will look at the skills and techniques you need to calculate more complex measurements of money, time, length, distance, weight, capacity, temperature, perimeter, area and volume.

Learn how to convert money between currencies and how to calculate journey times.

You will be shown how to read metric/imperial conversion graphs and how to use formulae to calculate the perimeter, area and volume of squares, rectangles and cuboids.

Explore the special rules and techniques for calculating the circumference and area of circles.

 Shape and Space
All the objects around us have three dimensions – they have height, width and depth.

When we look at the same object in a picture, a diagram or even a photograph, we can see just its height and width.

You will explore the concepts of 2D and 3D and shows you how to read and use 2D representations of 3D objects.

We will begin by explaining why three or more views are necessary to provide all the details of a 3D object.

It shows you how to create a ‘bird’s eye’ or plan view and how to show vertical surfaces using side views.

You will learn how to combine these different views together to create an overall impression of a 3D object and how to draw a net to represent a 3D object in a slightly different way.

Finally, we will look at the special rules of drawing and problem solving using parallel lines.

 Handling Data
We will give you the skills you need to understand complex data in charts, diagrams and line graphs.

You will learn how to collect your own data and how to present it in charts and graphs for other people to use.

We explain the important difference between discrete data and continuous data.

You will learn how to interpret the information on more complex data display mechanisms such as two-way tables, dual bar charts and continuous bar charts.

You will be shown how to use a data capture sheet to collect information in an organised way and how to use a spreadsheet programme to display your findings.

Finally, you will learn all about averages and the formulae you need to calculate mean, median, mode, range and frequency distribution.
