Care First Careers will guide you to find work and get further in your career in the social care sector.

The social care sector offers challenging and rewarding careers, from managing care homes to supporting people to live independently. This growing sector and can provide long term, secure employment.

The amount of training completed varies from person to person, depending on your needs. An allocated adviser will support you to decide which training to complete.

It aims to get you into paid work for over 16 hours per week working with individuals that need additional support in everyday life.

 What kind of job will I get if I access Care First Careers?
  • Home Care Worker
    Supporting someone in their own home providing day-to-day human contact.
  • Residential Care Worker
    Supporting someone in a residential home to live their life to the fullest.
  • Personal Assistant
    Working on a one-to-one basis with a person to provide whatever practical support they need.
  • Community Worker
    Providing practical support in the community to help adults lead fuller, more independent lives.

 

 Who might I work with?
You could support:
  • adults with disabilities
  • elderly people
  • adults with mental health problems.

 

 What kind of activities might I complete once in work?
  • Helping to get people from one place to another.
  • Doing personal admin, like helping to organise paying bills or writing letters.
  • Organising fun activities like bingo, playing cards or swimming.
  • Helping with personal tasks like washing, dressing and eating meals.
  • Helping with the housework.

 

 Who can access this programme?
The programme is fully funded by the Government if you:
  • are 18–24 years old
  • are a British Citizen, come from an EU member country or have lived in UK for 3 years or more
  • are on Job Seekers Allowance (JSA)
  • have been unemployed for 26–50 weeks (6–12 months).
Customers can be fast tracked to the Young Person’s Guarantee.
 What other help is available?
Childcare and bus fares are paid for on this provision. You will also receive a training allowance.
 How long does the programme last?
Each programme lasts 2–8 weeks, depending on individual needs.
You will complete 16–30 hours per week.

 Further study
When you find a job in a social care environment you can progress onto a fully funded qualification. If you are 19 years old or over you can complete an NVQ in Health & Social Care Level 2 . If you are 18 you can complete an Apprenticeship in Health & Social Care.

 How do I sign up?
Your Jobcentre Plus Adviser must refer you by calling Care Training on 0115 9599 544. They will book you in for an initial appointment at a location convenient to you. An SL2 will accompany the referral. On making an initial appointment, an information pack will be sent to you containing directions and an appointment card.
