Reading Keen Thinking Green Event
Held on Monday October 22, this family event was a great success.

The day consisted of two themes:

Firstly, the Reading Keen area, littered with children's books, was the scene for Roi Kwabena's story telling.

Roi enchanted the children with his extraordinary tales and songs from the Caribbean. He even embarked on a tale involving a monkey, a swarm of bees and the Market Square.

After the stories Roi encouraged the children to talk about their favourite story books and why they enjoyed reading with their parents. They talked about reading at school and how Roi's stories were different to the stories they were used to.

Recommended Reading for 5-9 year olds.

Literature about the benefits of reading with children was made available to parents to take away. Some were surprised how important reading with children is to their early development.

The free learndirect book

This short break gave us the opportunity to hand out the free learndirect book “Where did the River Go?”, donated by UFI in support of the Read Together Campaign. The book is interactive and has puzzles and brain teasers to get kids thinking.

Care Training have given away almost all of the books donated to them by UFI and in the process have captured the details of parents that would like more information on courses available to them.

It was then on to Mariel’s Green Village!

Decorated in finery from Nottingham’s very own Cattle Market, the “village” transformed the usually quiet, peaceful environment of the learndirect suite into a mass of hyperactive children.

The area was full of brightly coloured information about recycling and the ecosystem, all aimed at encouraging children to think about world waste.

Companies such as the WWF, Green Guardians, Friends of the Earth, and Green Peace all contributed paraphernalia and goodies for the little ones, creating a very happy group of children.

All eyes then focused on the arts and crafts available.

Plasterscene,

stickers, colouring

and modeling

were the flavours of the day.

With a huge amount of glitter thrown in we managed to create an eco village that out sparkled the Eiffel Tower on New Year.

Favourite animals created included caterpillars and butterflies.

There were even a few multicoloured tree’s thrown in for good measure!

As Mariel battled to keep the plasterscene on the table, and not in the carpet, parents indulged in a little grown-up time; Care Training’s learndirect team was on-hand to provide information to parents on the courses available.

All the talk of books and reading must have made an impact as we signed two people up on the day for Literacy courses. Many others were interested and enjoyed discovering the various different types of learndirect courses and qualifications.

As the eco village grew the children became tired and decided it was time for home. Followed by fully laden parents, clutching their favourite home made models and learndirect book, the children left.

Unfortunately there was little respite for Care Training staff members as the clean up began!
