“I feel better about myself too as I have proved to myself that I am able to get a job.”

Adam, 18, from Bilborough, Nottingham, left college after deciding that it wasn’t necessarily for him. After going through difficulties at home, Adam wanted to get back on track, so started attending his local Jobcentre Plus for guidance to find work.

“It is impossible to get a job at the moment; I found it hard and wasn’t having any luck. I applied to lots of jobs and went to the jobs fairs including the Keep Nottingham Working event at the Ice Arena, which is where I met Care Training East Midlands (CTEM).”

Once on ignite, Adam received one-to-one support from Clair Crofts, ignite’s project manager, to develop his employability skills. Day one was spent job and Apprenticeship searching. From that, Adam gained an interview with Kingsbury House Care Home in Sherwood.

“When I was sat waiting for my interview I could see myself working there. I have experience caring for a family member, which I think helped me,” Adam says.

Adam is due to start his Apprenticeship in Health & Social Care at Kingsbury House once his CRB check has come back. Additionally, as Kingsbury House specialises in Mental Healthcare, Adam’s knowledge and training will be enhanced, boosting his future opportunities.

“Once I’ve completed my Level 2, I want to be put forward to complete the Level 3 qualification. Eventually I see myself becoming a nurse and working in a hospital. I will put the effort in and work my way up.”

“Although my time at CTEM has been brief I am really glad I came. I have family members who were looking for work before I started coming to ignite and they are still looking now. They should come to CTEM. I not only got a job after a few sessions, but I feel better about myself too as I have proved to myself that I am able to get a job.”

Clair says, “It’s absolutely amazing to start an Apprenticeship in such a short period of time. He is now on his first step of the pathway. I am really chuffed for him.”

Whilst waiting for his CRB check to come through, Adam will be attending CTEM to start work towards his technical certificate, part of the Apprenticeship.

Adam suggests to future ignite learners: “If you are unsure, don’t think about it – come and talk to Clair, she will sort you out. Everyone is really supportive.”
