The Mobile Classroom is recognised by the Excellence Gateway

When funding was secured from NIACE (National Institute of Adult Continuing Education) and CEL (Centre for Excellence in Leadership), it was decided that Care Training East Midlands would use the money to purchase innovative technology for teaching.

Photo: Curriculum Manager Bruce Sheeran using the eBeam (which is in the top right-hand corner). To transform any wall into an interactive whiteboard, you project the screen of a laptop onto it then attach the eBeam.

The technology purchased creates a portable classroom. This includes:

  • A laptop and projector that can project the screen of a laptop onto any white, flat surface, for example a wall.
  • An eBeam that transforms the laptop projection into an interactive whiteboard. Tutors and learners can use the stylus to write with or even click buttons in a website physically from the wall.
  • A set of Qwizdom remotes. A series of quiz-style individual keypads for participants to monitor their own results in confidence. No one else except the tutor knows the results.
  • A dongle (broadband wireless adaptor), allowing the laptop to connect to the internet anywhere. This means the technology can be used for teaching across all vocational areas that Care Training East Midlands run.
  • A colour printer.
  • A set of speakers.
  • A scanner.

Bruce lived out of a pilot-case when he worked as a pilot, and he used it for inspiration.
The case has both a handle and wheels so is fairly portable.

Believe it or not, the whole kit fits neatly into a pilot’s case. It can be easily transported from training centre to employer premises.

The kit makes for a far more interactive training session, meaning learners feel more involved and less like being back at school. This is evidenced through the training conducted by Care Training East Midlands at National Autoparts. Lucy Watson, Human Resources Manager at National Autoparts, says, “It’s an impressive piece of kit!” Lucy has seen a dramatic increase in the confidence of the workforce as a result of the training. The Mobile Classroom has recently been recognised by the Excellence Gateway as an example of good learning practice. The Excellence Gateway is a portal for sharing best practice in further education. It’s an area where good ideas and resources can be shared. The Mobile Classroom has enabled Care Training East Midlands to be represented on the Excellence Gateway as an innovative institution for learning.
