An Apprenticeship is a programme of learning and qualifications that gives young people the skills, knowledge and competence they need to progress in their chosen career or industry.

Apprenticeships are delivered as an integrated programme of learning leading to the acquisition and application of the skills, knowledge and understanding required by employers.

You can become an apprentice in many different vocational areas, allowing you to be one step ahead of the game when it comes to applying for fully qualified positions with your chosen employer.

Whether you are looking for a job that enables you to carry on learning, or are already in employment and want to gain further qualifications, an Apprenticeship could be the option for you. They allow you to start work and earn a decent wage, while learning new skills that will lead to nationally recognised qualifications.

Why do an Apprenticeship?
Earnings
Research shows that apprentices earn, on average, over £100,000 more throughout their lifetime than other employees. Your career doesn’t have to stop at the Advanced Apprenticeship, if you want to go on to University you will find many institutes of Higher Education value your skills and knowledge and will happily offer you a place on a Foundation Degree or other higher level qualifications.
Support during training
Your employer or training provider will make sure you have a mentor/assessor. Their job is to ensure that your training fits your personal requirements, offers the skills needed for the job and satisfies national standards. They will also be there to help you through any difficult times.
Prospects
Apprenticeships can be demanding but they are very rewarding. Because Apprenticeships train you in the skills employers want, they give you choices in your career. When you’ve finished you can carry on working, maybe get promoted or go on to higher education in a college or university.

What it is made up of
  • An NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) which demonstrates the apprentice's competence in their job role. NVQs are based on the competencies and skills needed by an individual to perform their job to a high quality standard.
  • Key Skills which give the apprentice the generic skills they will need in business (e.g. Communication, Numeracy, Problem Solving).
  • A Technical Certificate which underpins the apprentice's job role. This is a broad based qualification that can be integrated with your in-house training and other relevant technical qualifications. Technical knowledge of the job is essential to achieving work as a fully integrated employee.

Course length

We will work with you for as long as it takes you to complete the Apprenticeship, but most people complete within 12 months.

How you are assessed

The 3 different elements are assessed in different ways:

  • NVQs are assessed on practical assignments and a portfolio of evidence. Normally, a qualified assessor will observe you and question you about the real work you carry out in the workplace (or a realistic working environment). You will have to write short essays to cover the modules in your NVQ.
  • Key Skills, including Adult Numeracy and Literacy Certificates, are normally assessed through training with a test at the end to achieve the qualification(s).
  • The Technical Certificate consists of a series of small assignments regarding your vocational area of work. They are marked by your mentor or assessor and verified by the accrediting body.

How much it costs

The total cost for the qualifications and training you complete through the Apprenticeship is around £3000, however due to government funding currently available you could be eligible for funding so you don’t have to pay.

So long as you are between the ages of 16 to 24 and have lived in the UK for three years or more or come from an EU member country then you will be eligible.

If you match this criteria, it won’t cost you a thing!
