Virginia’s volunteering has enabled her to gain an NVQ in Business Administration

Virginia Summers, aged 44, is originally from the Philippines and lives in St Ann’s, Nottingham. She currently works part-time as a domestic assistant with the NHS. Not only does she work part-time and look after her daughter, aged eight, she also manages to find the time to volunteer at the offices of Inspire at least eight hours a week in a business administration role.

Virginia initially started volunteering with Inspire as a way of building up experience. It wasn’t until she had been volunteering a few weeks when she heard about the NVQ in Business Administration that she could complete with Care Training East Midlands. Once Virginia had spoken to Care Training East Midlands, she established she could get the NVQ Level 2 fully-funded through Train to Gain. Virginia really appreciated this, as she felt she wouldn’t have been able to afford the qualification otherwise.

Virginia signed up for her NVQ and completed her induction in January 2009. Virginia found her assessor, Sue, very supportive. The NVQ has given Virginia the confidence to start applying for full-time administrator jobs. This vocational qualification demonstrates that Virginia is capable of completing a qualification alongside building experience to apply to her CV.Virginia has really enjoyed meeting the staff and students at Inspire. She feels she has gained new skills as well as friends through volunteering.

When Virginia considers the future, she wants to complete the NVQ and get a full-time job to fit around her daughter’s schooling.
