Adrian Turner
aged 24

Adrian attended school but didn’t enjoy the classroom environment and style of teaching. As a result he left school with a few GCSEs at low grades. Adrian really wanted to improve on these qualifications to give him the best possible chance of finding a job he really enjoyed.

After leaving school Adrian worked as a Sales Assistant and Factory Operative, but never felt satisfied in his job. He says, “I started working as a trainee sign writer, which I enjoyed at first but got bored with quite quickly. I knew I wanted to work with people as I enjoy human interaction, but I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do.”

Adrian was referred to Care Training by his Jobcentre Plus Adviser. He was unsure of what area he wanted work in so he took advantage of our nextstep advice service. This is service provides individuals with one-to-one information, advice and guidance about any type of job, allowing them to make an informed decision about training and work.

After his nextstep appointment Adrian was sure he wanted to work with people in the Care sector, allowing him to help people while working with them. He asked to be referred to the New Deal Care Course, allowing him to improve his general qualifications while also studying Care.

While with Care Training Adrian achieved qualifications in First Aid, Food Hygiene and Health & Safety. He also gained Adult Literacy and Numeracy Level 1 and 2 qualifications. Adrian says, “I was really pleased I got the chance to do some extra qualifications as well as train for Care, it made my time at Care Training even more relevant to the work I want to do in the future. All the staff were really helpful and gave me extra support where I needed it; they arranged all the short courses for me too, so all I needed to do is turn up! I could really tell the difference between Care Training and the schools and colleges I’d been to. I was treated like an adult and not like a student that needed to be told what to do. I found this put me at ease and helped me to learn in a much more comfortable environment.”

After finishing the course Adrian was offered the opportunity to complete work experience in a Care setting. This experience is going well and his manager has offered him full time work subject to him completing an NVQ Level 2 in Health & Social Care. Care Training have found funding for him to complete this qualification and Adrian is looking forward to a fulfilling career in Care.

Care Training say, “Adrian’s attitude to learning and qualifications is to be admired. After a rocky start at school he still gave us the benefit of the doubt, and as a result has achieved so much. He will be a major asset to any Care employer.”
