Danielle Purdy was determined to develop her skills. Being unsuccessful with job searching without any support she got quite frustrated. As soon as she knew she was eligible for Routes into Work she asked her adviser Teresa Seymour from Station Street Jobcentre Plus to refer her for a pre-talk with Care Training to find out more about the training programmes.
Danielle had previously worked across a variety of areas, including retail, cleaning and catering. She enjoyed this work and wanted to find work in either of these areas again. Upon attending her pre-talk at Care Training, Danielle found out about the variety of training available through Routes into Work and decided to embark on the Retail programme.
Within a few weeks Danielle had started the programme. She completed training in team building, food hygiene and customer service. This all supported Danielle to improve her application form, CV and letter writing techniques, in order for her to sell herself to prospective employers in an improved manner.
Danielle says, “I was surprised at how much support I actually received. Before the programme I didn’t think I would get a job but I was impressed with how much the advisers work with you to really make the best of your application.”
Danielle soon established that the support was paying off; it wasn’t long before she was getting responses from her job applications. Danielle was pleased she had “improved her skills and made her more appealing to employers.”
Danielle was offered a work position at the coffee shop at East Midlands Airport. She felt this was a good opportunity to encompass her variety of experience. In her new role she is cleaning, waitressing and serving at a bar. She says, “I really enjoy it and have been there two months already.”
At the moment Danielle is happy in her new found work and would like to move higher in her current workplace when she has built up the experience. But her learning hasn’t stopped, she is continuing her training through learndirect to achieve her Level 2 Certificates in Adult Literacy and Numeracy.
