Part 2

Kirsty came to Care Training as one of our first Care First Careers learners. Care First Careers is designed to support young people aged 18–24 into work in the health and social care sector. This sector offers challenging and rewarding careers, to support adults who are elderly, have disabilities or perhaps have mental health problems to live as independently as possible.

Kirsty says, “I had previously worked in call centres and sales before I came to Care Training; I had wanted to work as a carer ever since I cared for my mum when she was ill. I had applied for loads of care jobs in the past, but with no experience I couldn’t even get an interview”.

Kirsty started her Care First Careers vocational training in April 2010. Kirsty says, “I found the advice and training really informative and enjoyable. The tutors explained the jobs that were available in the care sector at the time and what employers were looking for”.

As part of the programme Kirsty received support with her covering letter and application form when applying for jobs. Kirsty says, “Care Training helped me to sell myself and the experience that I had now gained with Care Training; I was so happy to get an interview for the first job that I applied for and then to be offered the job. I could not believe it”.

Kirsty secured full time employment as a Support Worker after just four weeks with Care Training. She will be working at Woodley House in Ruddington, caring for people that have autism and dementia. Kirsty plans to gain her NVQ Level 2 in Health & Social Care. Her aspirations for her career is to one day be a manager of a care home, or a home care worker.

James Godsell, Kirsty’s adviser at Care Training, says, “Kirsty from the start was very keen and dedicated to the programme and I am very happy that she has now moved into employment, she more than deserved it”.

Whilst Kirsty is waiting for her CRB check to come back, she is continuing her vocational training in areas such as Manual Handling and First Aid. Kirsty says, “Care Training gave me a route to find a job that I really wanted; they have supported me from the start and are still supporting me even though I have found my job”.
