The Training Needs Analysis

Following a staff survey across the whole of the workforce, Lands' End, in Oakham identified a need for training relevant to individual employee roles.  Lands' End first engaged with Central Skills through The Business Link Skills Portal in July 2009.

Sarah, an Employer Engagement Consultant at Central Skills, conducted a Training Needs Analysis (TNA) for Lands' End. The purpose of the TNA was to assess exactly what  Lands' End were looking for in a training provider and identify the most suitable training for employees at Lands' End. This demonstrates how Central Skills creates training programmes specifically for employers and the individual job roles within the organisation.

The results of the TNA recommened Lands' End to invest in training for employees in the Warehouse, Administration and Customer Service Teams. As Central Skills had access to government funding, Lands' End didn’t have to worry about any cost implications.

Overcoming concerns

One concern from the Management Team at Lands' End was they did not want the external training to interfere too much with the everyday responsibilities of employees and cause too much disruption to the day-to-day running of the company.

This was soon overcome due to Central Skills’ method of assessment – the assessor visits the learner in the workplace and observes them in their role completing their workplace tasks. This highlights the flexibility of the NVQs delivered by Central Skills.  Phil Pickering, Warehousing and Storage Assessor at Central Skills, ensures a lack of disruption by checking and then confirming with employee and employer convenient times to visit the site and complete assessments.

Positive outcomes for all

The NVQ tailored to the individual’s job role meant the employees were gaining nationally recognised qualifications, something for the employee to add to their CV and demonstrate their ability in the work place. And something for the employer to use as a symbol they are keen to invest in their workforce and ensure their staff are qualified.

The professional and knowledgeable approach from assessors at Central Skills meant the qualifications were completed efficiently.

Lands' End are pleased with  the results. In particular, employees feel their employers have invested in them and demonstrate appreciation. This is supported by a second staff survey identifying an improvement in learning opportunities.
