Congratulations to our very own Louise Grant for achieving her Level 2 Certificate in Adult Numeracy. I caught up with Louise to chat about how she found studying for the qualification.

Helen: So Louise I hear congratulations are in order?

Louise: Oh yes they are! I’m really pleased I’ve finally managed to get my Numeracy, it sounds silly but it’s a really big deal to me.

H: Why were you so worried about studying Numeracy before becoming employed by Care Training?

L: Well, when I was at school I really struggled with Numeracy. My English was good so I concentrated on that. You always concentrate on what you’re good at don’t you? I think after that I got a mental block, I convinced myself I couldn’t do it and my teachers at school weren’t very supportive so I just gave up on Numeracy I guess. My lack of Numeracy skills were confirmed to me when I got a U in my GCSE; I just thought it was something I’d never be able to do so I just had to deal with it. When I started working for Care Training I knew I could study Numeracy but those lessons from school still haunted me! With a little persuasion from Bruce I decided it was time to get this qualification for my own sense of achievement if nothing else.

H: So you decided to take the plunge then?

L: I wanted to prove it to myself you know? Anyway Bruce was amazing as a tutor. He gave me one to one support when I needed it and before each practice paper he would go through the fundamentals with me. When I was in the exam I imagined him on my shoulder, so that really helped with my nerves.

H: What would you say to anyone out there who is worrying about completing a similar qualification?

L: If I can do it anyone can! No matter how old you are or your situation it really is just a matter of taking that first step and asking for extra support where you need it. Bruce and Rowena are amazing tutors so people should take advantage.
