Before coming to Care Training East Midlands, Sean Wilson lacked confidence and would only apply for low skilled jobs that didn’t require specific qualifications.

He heard about the 13 week New Deal Retail course (now replaced by Routes into Work) from his adviser Jane at the Jobcentre Plus in Bulwell. Sean initially started a similar employability course at another training provider, but he didn’t feel comfortable, so Jane referred him to Care Training East Midlands.

Sean immediately noticed the positive atmosphere and enjoyed the mixed age range of people. He didn’t realise how much support he would get and feels “the whole 13 weeks have been a positive experience.”

Throughout the 13 weeks Sean completed a variety of qualifications. He completed his Health & Safety Certificate Level 2 and the Customer Service Level 1.

One of Sean’s biggest aims for the programme was to achieve his Certificates in Adult Literacy and Numeracy. He saw these as a barrier he needed to overcome in order to find secure employment.

Following his Initial Assessment he undertook modules to get him from Entry Level 3 through to Level 2. Sean spent a lot of his spare time picking up spellings and working on his grammar. He admits to being a perfectionist now, and will spot mistakes in literature straight away.

Sean feels far more confident in applying for jobs that require qualifications in GCSE level Maths and English. Something he feels he missed out on before he came to Care Training East Midlands.

Of his experience at Care Training East Midlands Sean says,
“It’s been good. I’ve got what I want. The learndirect team were supportive and answered my questions when needed. Everyone is very helpful.”

Sean was even there to support other learners. Because of his positive experience with the learndirect team Sean was able to support other learners with gaining the confidence to ask a member of staff for help.
